IND vs ENG | Don’t see any reason why Washington Sundar should be replaced, asserts Deep Dasgputa
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar has come under scanner after a poor first Test with the ball but former Indian cricketer Deep Dasgputa has thrown his weight behind the youngster. He, however, also added that both Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav are quality options for the second Test.Left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem and all-rounder Washington Sundar have been criticized for their role with the ball in first Test after a lackluster performance. Not since Kevin Pietersen's epic 186 in Mumbai in 2012 has there been many instances when Indian spinners have been hammered as brutally as the Chennai Test. Barring R Ashwin, who fought back well in the second innings and ended with nine wickets in the game, the other two spinners were taken for a ride, which completely worked against India.Shahbaz Nadeem conceded 233 runs for his four wickets in the first Test and gave runs at 3.80 per over in first innings and 4.40 in the second innings respectively. On the other hand, Washington Sundar, fresh from his heroics at Gabba, was also exposed, as he went wicketless in the game and was dealt with as ease as if a part-timer that too at his own home ground. However, Washington had a great outing with the bat in the first innings as he scored a brilliant half-century and would have even got to his century had he gotten more support from the other end. Former Indian wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta has batted for the all-rounder, stating that he doesn't see any reason to drop the 21-year-old.“Honestly with how Shahbaz bowled in the last Test match I think there will be replacement. Washington Sundar was played more as a batsman who can bowl somebody who can bat at number 7 and he did a wonderful job, especially in the first innings, the way he batted. So I don't see any reason why Washington should be replaced unless it's a strategic call,” Dasgupta said on Sports Today, reported HT.As per reports, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav are likely to come in place of Washington Sundar and Shahbaz Nadeem respectively. The cricket pundit, however, feels both are quality options but reckons only one of the two might play."I do see a replacement but the question is who. I think both Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel are quality choices. Axar would have been your first choice even in the first Test match but unfortunately, he was injured. Axar could be a very, very good choice and so will Kuldeep but I think Axar because left-arm orthodox spinner brings in more control, that's the reason why he might be preferred and it's a straight swap, Axar coming in for Nadeem (both are left-arm spinners). I don't see both of them playing together and I guess Axar will be a choice," Dasgupta said.Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

Reports | Ravindra Jadeja ruled out of England Test series; not to join Indian team in Ahmedabad
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Ravindra Jadeja, who suffered a finger injury during the third Test against Australia in Sydney, has been reportedly ruled out of the remainder of the Test series and will not join the Ahmedabad bubble as originally planned. He was sent to the NCA in Bengaluru for 'further management of his injury'.Over the last few years, Ravindra Jadeja has grown in stature to become one of the most important members of the Indian Test side, especially in home conditions. However, he was ruled out of the first two Tests in Chennai after dislocating his thumb during the Sydney Test against Australia. He was subsequently ruled out of the Brisbane Test was sent to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for 'further management of his injury'.However, Cricbuzz now reported that his injury hasn't recovered enough for him to take any part in the third and fourth Test and he is all set to set out for those two games as well. Jadeja was supposed to reach Ahmedabad early for the mandatory quarantine to be ready to join the full squad but now, in all probability, that is shelved. An official confirmation is awaited. In Jadeja's absence, India decided to go with Washington Sundar as the batting all-rounder as Axar Patel suffered a knee injury in the last moment. With Ashwin and Shahbaz Nadeem bowling in tandem with Sundar, the side had not a lot to offer in terms of variations. Kohli conceded that India will think of the combinations ahead for the second Test."There are no regrets whatsoever on that decision. Moving forward, we will think of the combinations which bring us variety as a bowling attack, and not one dimensional, turning away from the bat." the India captain said in reply to a query on Kuldeep.Interestingly, there are reports that Axar Patel has been recovered fully and joined the nets. He is one of the players, who could get the nod ahead to make his Test debut in Chennai.Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

IND vs ENG | It was a crucial toss to lose; never seen an SG ball wear up this much, opines Ravichandran Ashwin
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Looking back at the Test’s proceedings, Ravichandran Ashwin opined that it was a crucial toss for the Indian team to lose while giving his impression over the state of the SG ball on day four. He also added that at one point during his partnership with Washington, they hoped to wipe the follow-on.It was indeed a memorable Test for Ravichandran Ashwin, who has played most of his cricket in this part of the country. In the first innings, he had bowled 55 overs, the most that he has bowled in an innings, picking up just three wickets. Meanwhile, in the second, he picked up six wickets in under 18 overs, showing the state of the pitch. After the end of fourth day’s play, Ashwin opined that it was a crucial toss to lose for the Indians while calling the state of the ‘SG’ ball as bizarre, with the red cherry tearing up quicker than the usual. While stating that it was a good batting track on the first two days, he insisted that a good fifth day could propel India to a famous victory.  “Look, personally when I saw the wicket, I knew it would be a good wicket to bat. It was sort of a crucial toss for us as it was a good batting wicket. On day one and two, there wasn’t much on offer, it was a good batting track. If we have a good fifth day, we can round it off and win the Test,” said Ashwin in the virtual press conference. "It could well be a combination of how hard the pitch was on the first two days. Even in the second innings, after the 35th-40th over, the seam started to sort of peel of. It was bizarre. I haven't seen an SG ball like that in the last so many years. But yeah, maybe it could be due to the pitch and hardness of it... But we will have an answer for it going through the series," he added. The Indian offie also insisted that he had his plans well set for English skipper Joe Root, who came out with a sweeping plan against the Indian spinners. He also pointed out that in the second innings, his ploy to sweep didn’t work out due to the slower nature of the wicket. “First, let me tell you, he (Root) was not sweeping a lot against me. We had plans in place for him off my bowling, where he didn’t get a lot of runs. In the second innings, he couldn’t get the same kind of runs, the pitch got slower and slower, which made him tough for him to score off the sweep.”On Ishant’s 300th Test wicket and 100th wicket in home Tests, Ashwin called the lanky pacer as one of the most hardworking people in the dressing room. “Look Ishant is one of the most hardworking people in the dressing room. Being that tall itself requires a lot of facets to be looking at. From dismissing Ricky Ponting to this, for a pacer to get 100 Test wickets in India is a big achievement. I can keep going on and compliment Ishant but he should go and pick more wickets, becoming a roadmap for the other pacers.”Recalling his partnership with fellow Tamil Nadu all-rounder Washington Sundar, Ashwin stated that they actually hoped to wipe down the follow-on and even get closer to their target. The off-spinner also called his dismissal as unfortunate, with the amount of bounce, more than he had faced before. He also called Washington, a quite special batsman and insisted that playing spin is one of the facets that they have developed playing cricket in Tamil Nadu. “We actually did believe that we could wipe down the follow-on and even get closer to their target, we just needed to pick our battles properly. For me, the ball bounced a bit too much. Playing spin is one facet of the game that players growing here will be good with, Washi is quite a special batsmen. He played really well and has been playing like for some time.”Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

IND vs ENG | Chepauk Day 4 Talking Points: Washington’s crazy potential, England’s clinical display and same old ‘SG’ ball
By admin | | 0 Comments |

England had another great day in the opening Test as they continued to dominate India in all departments of the game. Despite Sundar's wonderful 85*, England ended India's innings on 337 and then were quite proactive to score 178 on a tricky surface to leave the hosts with a record chase of 420.Washington Sundar's unflappable temperament Washington Sundar is an anomaly. Someone with as little experience as the left-hander in first-class cricket has no right to show so much maturity, compactness, a solid judgement of off-stump, ability to soak in pressure, hit elegant shots and all that at the age of 21, which is crazy, given how much he can develop in times to come. When he bats, one thing that is apparent is he can bat up the order than seven. One thing in common in the first three Test innings of Washington has been the pressure situations that he has been subjected to and how beautifully he has conquered them to prove a point. Pretty much like the Gabba Test, Washington arrived at the crease, when India needed a solid performance from him. They were 192 for 5 in response to England's massive 578. He started with some magnificent shots. But as soon as Rishabh Pant got out, he took the role of the senior man and batted with a lot of application to add 80 runs for the seventh wicket with Ashwin. He showcased discipline that was missing with most of the Indian batsmen, who had endured soft dismissals, all this in his second Test and only third innings. His judgement of the off-stump stood out whenever the pacers tried to test his technique. And against spin, he's master at work as such is the ease with which he milks the slower bowlers. He had endured a horrible time with the ball, but like a true all-rounder, he left behind a major impact with the willow in hand and if not for his well-made 85, India wouldn't have reached 337 from 225 for 6 given India's poor tail. India have found a solid talent in the all-rounder to invest in for future. England's clinical approach Swat-sweeping, slog-sweeping, switch-hitting, reverse-sweeps, flicks, England put an exhibition on a tricky fourth-day pitch as India opened the bowling with R Ashwin and Shahbaz Nadeem and even got the breakthrough on the first delivery of the English innings. It was as if the World Champion ODI team had turned up than the Test side as such was the audacity and attacking intent with which England batsmen countered Indian bowlers led by their skipper Joe Root who made a 32-ball-40. The pitch is such now that any ball can have your name written on it. The dismissals of Joe Root and Daniel Lawrence showed how difficult it is to bat on this wicket with invariable bounce on offer for pacers while spinners were getting good turn and bounce off the deck. There is a good length area too which explodes when the ball hits the deck there, all of which rings the alarm for batsmen.England, who were well ahead in-game with a big lead of 241, pretty well knew all they needed to do was to get to 150-175 and not 70-80 total to put India on to the back foot, which they duly did. They were disdainful on Nadeem as he wasn't allowed to settle in again and the tourists didn't even let Ashwin take a breather as Root again put up a sweep masterclass on display even though the offie was among wickets unexpectedly. Even in terms of bowling, after getting R Ashwin out, England didn't let Washington get away and took last three wickets for just 32 runs, which was worth gold given how complex it was supposed to bat in their second innings given the threat Indian bowlers possessed on a fourth day Chepauk wicket. Same old soft 'SG' ball and Kohli's tactics One of the overlooked things in this Test has been the use of a modified SG ball between India and England. There have been some complaints from senior Indian players in the past about the ball turning soft quite early with R Ashwin even stating that "The SG ball used to be top-notch, and you could bowl with it even after the 70th or 80th over. The seam used to be standing up strong and straight. But it is not the same anymore."In this Test SG ball with a pronounced seam, harder core and with a darker shade of red is being used but to no avail. The ball was expected to retain the hardness till 60th over but today, it went soft from the 11th over itself, maybe because of the dry nature of the Chepauk deck or reasons best known to the ball manufactures. Bowling in India has been a nightmare in comparison to bowling with the Dukes, or even the Kookaburra ball and it doesn't seem to be changing any soon.Virat Kohli was good with his captaincy today in terms of tactics and aggression but not starting with the Jasprit Bumrah who is tailor-made for exploiting the fourth-day Chepauk surface with invariable bounce was hard to comprehend even if we weigh up what Nadeem offered, extra bounce, and he returned sans a wicket, giving 23 runs in six overs. Kohli didn't bring Bumrah till the 22nd over, who got the danger Root early and troubled English batsmen a lot. Also, not giving the ball to Ashwin post-tea session early was surprising given the offie had already taken three wickets and looked the most dangerous alongside Bumrah. Also, Root was constantly targeting the vacant mid-wicket region by sweeping the bowlers, with Kohli slow to fill in the gap.Sloppy India India have overstepped the line too often in this Test. While England only bowled one no-ball in their innings, India delivered 20 no-balls in the first innings and 7 in the second, to end up with 27 no-balls. Also, India were quite slow in their over-rate today, which has been the case earlier too in the game and can prove deferential as World Test Championship points are docked for slow over-rate.  Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

Why the Chennai Test has shown that India’s ‘Jaddu-obsession’ is unhealthy
By admin | | 0 Comments |

England won the toss in the first Test of a tour they were expected to lose 4-0 and batted and batted and batted - for 190 overs. And scored 578. Understandably, the Chepauk curator has received plenty of flack, but we look at why the first innings exposed a bigger issue at hand for the hosts. What’s the issue?India’s obsession to field a Ravindra Jadeja clone. Ever since India realized that Ravindra Jadeja’s batting was reliable enough for him to warrant a spot in the Top 7, they’ve deployed a five-bowler strategy. The wicket-keeper, Jadeja and Ashwin - in no particular order - slot in at 6, 7 and 8 respectively, giving the side the flexibility to play three more specialist bowlers pertinent to the conditions. In the absence of Jadeja in the first Test in Chennai, the management looked to replicate the same tactic by installing a Jadeja prototype but, erm, let’s say it did not go down too well. The bowling, ultimately, lacked bite and the hosts ended up conceding 578, with the fourth and the fifth bowlers - Sundar and Nadeem - returning combined figures of 2/265 off 70 overs. The wicket, indisputably, was flat, but the 190 overs demands introspection over India’s tactic. How is the Jaddu-obsession detrimental to the team?Logically, one would think playing five bowlers in comparison to four is bound to yield the side better results with the ball, but that is a bland assumption devoid of key intangibles. What ultimately matters is if the bowlers picked possess the quality to derail the opposition. In the absence of Jadeja, India were keen to blood-in a like-for-like replacement, hence the eagerness to field one of Washington Sundar or Axar Patel. Both Sundar and Axar are finger-spinners capable of batting at #7, and both offer the three-dimensionality that Jadeja brings to the table. But while it is true that they bring the same package as Jadeja, there is daylight in the quality of the primary skill (bowling, in this case) between Sundar/Axar and Jadeja. The Saurashtra all-rounder is often celebrated for his three-dimensionality, but people tend to conveniently forget that he is, behind Ashwin, the second-best spinner across the past decade. Completely keeping his batting aside, Jadeja averages 24.32 with the ball, and this number comes down to a ridiculous 21.06 in 33 Test matches at home. Just to put into perspective how good these numbers are, Ashwin, the greatest off-spinner since Muralitharan, averages two more (23.14) at home. By selecting a ‘Jadeja prototype’ India are fitting someone in the side who does the same things, albeit much worse, but are simply not doing what they should be doing: picking a spinner who offers the same threat with the ball. Sundar’s outing in the first innings is a classic case in point - he filled the Jadeja-shaped void in the side in terms of the package, yet ultimately failed at his primary job, which is to threaten with the ball. He is by no means to blame for it, for he’s far away from being a Test-level spinner, but him being picked to serve as a third spinner means that he needs to provide a cutting edge with the ball; and not just serve ‘handy’ owing to his package. This would also have held true to Axar had he been picked. Axar, too, is light-years away from being amongst the Top 5 spinners in the country and was, as revealed by Kohli himself, only considered because of India’s Jaddu obsession. This is not to deviate from the fact that India ultimately found themselves in the position they did because of the lacklustre display of the designated second spinner, Shahbaz Nadeem. Yet these kinds of situations are precisely why you pick a fifth bowler (in this case, a third spinner) - to make up even if one of the premier bowlers have an off-game. Nadeem had a performance to forget, yes, but it was exacerbated by the fact that Sundar was incapable of filling-in and masking it, ultimately defeating the purpose of having a fifth bowler. “This is just the three-spinners scenario; a Jadeja-prototype can still play if India field three pacers.”Unless the team plays in a SENA-like wicket which is a paradise for pacers, this statement won’t hold true. India, particularly of late, have been drifting towards accommodating three seamers at home but this does not change the fact that the key to success lies in the hands of the spinners. From January 1, 2015 to up until the start of the ongoing Test, Indian spinners had taken almost twice as many wickets (330) as the pacers (166) in home games. This emphasizes the importance of the role the second spinner has to play, even in a three-man pace attack.  A Jadeja-prototype might be a flexible option but that player will not be of great use to the side unless he is as good as Jadeja himself with the ball. Does it mean India should just pick their five best bowlers? This can, of course, always be experimented with, but it will leave the side with a worryingly long tail. For instance, as soon as Axar injured himself, India could have gone ahead with Kuldeep, Nadeem and Ashwin as their three spinners but that would have left them with no half-decent batsman after Pant. Ashwin had a wild day out in Sydney but in his last 17 Tests at home, he averages 11.93 with the bat with no fifty-plus scores. Hence they had to make a compromise, and it came in the form of them leaving out Kuldeep (you could argue the Nadeem selection also had some Jaddu-obsession attached to it, for he is also a left-armer). So, what is the solution?Simple: in the absence of Jadeja, India either need to revert back to a four-bowler + 1 batting all-rounder strategy or ensure that, barring Ashwin, the second spinner they pick is the best spinner at their disposal, treating the No.7 slot as an all-rounder. In Chennai, Kuldeep, despite being a bigger threat than Nadeem, was overlooked because he turned the ball the same way as both Ashwin and the Jaddu prototype Sundar; as it turned out, Sundar and Nadeem’s lack of dexterity made the decision look ridiculous. Cracks can be papered over on turning tracks but, as was the case in the first two days of Chennai, on flat wickets it will be skill - and not the package - which will help punch holes in the heart of the opposition. Particularly with India completely reverting to preparing ‘we-will-outbat-you’ kind of flat wickets, it would become increasingly difficult for the side to bowl quality oppositions out at home with just one world-class spinner.  A four-bowler + 1 batting all-rounder (who here replaces the Jaddu prototype) strategy is less-ideal but it would, nevertheless, solve any kind of concern with regards to a long tail and enable the skipper to field the second spinner simply based on merit, not worrying about the individual’s other credentials. With Pandya unfit to bowl and with Vihari nursing an injury, though, this option, one imagines, would not be feasible for the side in the last three Tests. Why the Jaddu-obsession is unhealthy in the long run For more than one reason, India’s obsession with finding the perfect like-for-like replacement for Jadeja is unhealthy. One, as previously discussed, is the compromise in the drop in quality of bowling but secondly, and most importantly, the long-term ramifications it could have on the kind of expectations the management have from spinners. The selections of Sundar and Axar now, and Jayant Yadav previously, are clear indications of the management’s affinity for slower bowlers who can contribute with the bat (largely because most of the seamers can’t hold the willow). “Bowling combination we’ll try to give us as many options as possible, along with guys having the ability to contribute with the bat. That’s been the pattern for success for us in home conditions over the last few years and that continues to be the case this time around as well. The combination we’ve played in the past where guys can bowl and bat is something that will be at the forefront of our plans,” Kohli had said a day before the commencement of the first Test.Grooming all-rounders is healthy but to discard spinners ‘only’ because they cannot contribute with the bat is preposterous.India, currently, have as many as two back-ups for Jadeja, but are at a point where they have little clue as to who their best spinner apart from Ashwin and Jadeja is. Kuldeep was supposed to be the answer but his progress has stalled, and this has a lot to do with the fact that he continues to be overlooked simply because he does not tick other boxes unrelated to his bowling. If India are to not find themselves in a dire situation post the Jaddu-Ash era, they need to start investing in their best spinners. And by investing, it means not only identifying who those players are, but giving them the opportunity to develop and learn their trade while the big fishes are still around, and not just throwing them in the deep end when the time arrives. As things stand, they are not doing it, and it could have long term consequences.Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

IND vs ENG | We could have batted better and eliminated soft dismissals, rues Cheteshwar Pujara
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Cheteshwar Pujara, following the third day’s play, has rued that the Indian batting unit could have batted better on the day and should have eliminated the soft dismissals. However, Pujara insisted that his dismissal was unfortunate and added that he couldn’t have done anything about that.At 257/6, India would look back at their first innings effort, which has put them under undue pressure chasing England’s mammoth first innings total of 578. However, there were a lot of soft dismissals on the way, including a freakish dismissal which saw the back of Cheteshwar Pujara. Since then, the duo of Washington Sundar and Ravichandran Ashwin have stayed put at the crease to see the day out. During the day, however, there were a lot of dismissals, which irked Cheteshwar Pujara, who insisted that the home team could have shown more application with the bat. He also stated that there were a lot of soft dismissals which could have been eliminated. The Indian No.3 batsman also revealed that the pitch isn’t as bad as expected, with it still good enough to bat on. “There is a bit of spin now, I don’t think it is that bad. First two days it was really really flat, our bowlers did their best. It was a pitch that had no assistance for the spinners in the first two days. Anyways, we have to accept reality and move on. Batting wise, we could have batted better, there were some soft dismissals that could be eliminated, the way I got out and Rahane got out. But with Ashwin and Washington playing, hope they put on a partnership and put us in a good position tomorrow,” said Pujara in the virtual press conference. “We will try taking one session at a time, the first session tomorrow would be crucial. We would like to bat as long as possible. It’s still a good pitch to bat on and we have our tail-enders to bat, so there’s a lot to play for and we want to get close to their score.”Pujara also opened up on India’s approach, with the Indian batsmen getting their runs at a far higher pace than the English counterparts. He also opined that Ajinkya Rahane’s shot would have found the gap nine out of ten times and raced off to the boundary. However, on the day, it went straight into the hands of Joe Root, who put on a show in the field. “No it wasn’t part of a game plan (to score quickly), we just wanted to bat normally. The conditions are different, in India, the scoring rate is always on the higher side and there were loose deliveries. Rishabh bats that way, he wants to bat his natural way, that’s fair and that is how he should play. The ball was there for Rahane to hit but unfortunately for him, it went to covers. Nine out of ten times, he would have scored a boundary. I didn’t want to do anything extra, I was getting runs, we weren’t thinking of getting close to their total. We just wanted to put the bad balls away.”On his dismissal, the Saurashtra batsman sighed that it was a dismissal that he couldn’t do anything about, as the ball had hit the close-in fielder Ollie Pope before finding Rory Burns. “My dismissal is something I can’t do anything about as a batsman. That’s the only way I could have gotten out. Everything was going perfect and I was a bit disappointed about it. It was a bad ball and I can’t really help that it went to the fielder.”Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

IND vs ENG | Doesn’t make any sense to play two off-spinners in Chennai, remarks Harbhajan Singh
By admin | | 0 Comments |

After a late injury to Axar Patel, India opted to go with one left-arm spinner and two off-spinners, a decision which hasn’t gone down well with Harbhajan Singh. Irked by Kuldeep’s omission, Harbhajan has remarked that Kuldeep’s presence in the playing XI would have given a bit of variety. As it stands, India have opted to go with two off-spinners, in the form of Washington Sundar and Ravichandran Ashwin in the ongoing Chennai Test, omitting Kuldeep Yadav. While it is learnt that the decision was made after a last-minute injury to Axar Patel, it hasn’t left the former Indian players happy. Several players have flocked since the team was announced, to criticise the management of favouring the Chennai all-rounder over Kuldeep Yadav. Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh too has joined the list, remarking that it doesn’t make any sense to play two off-spinners at the Chepauk, while still having Kuldeep on the bench. He also added that it was understandable for him why the management insisted with Shahbaz Nadeem when Axar Patel was deemed injured. "It was astonishing for me to see Kuldeep Yadav not get a chance in Team India's playing XI despite him being in the squad. I can understand that since Axar Patel is injured, Shahbaz Nadeem came in as a like-for-like replacement. But it doesn't make sense to play two off-spinners in Chennai," Harbhajan told Sports Tak, reported HT.Since the Sydney Test, where Kuldeep picked up a fifer, the unorthodox left-arm spinner has been sidelined for the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja in the past. This year, the list has been extended to Washington Sundar and Shahbaz Nadeem, who have edged past the uncanny spinner. While India looked toothless on the first day, Harbhajan pointed out that Kuldeep could have made a difference. "Kuldeep Yadav's presence would have added a bit of variety to this Indian bowling attack. In the last two Tests that Kuldeep Yadav played, he had picked up five-wicket hauls. So I am completely baffled by his exclusion," Harbhajan asserted."This is also not a great sign for his confidence because it demoralizes you even further when you are a part of the squad but still can't make it to the playing XI."Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .
