European Golden Shoe 2020/21: Messi on the leaderboard but Lewandowski scores again
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Lionel Messi scored two goals of the highest quality in La Liga this weekend to take his tally to 15 for the season. Both of the Argentine's goals were scored from outside the box in superb fashion, as he helped Barcelona on their way to a 5-1 win against Alaves.Messi may now make our leaderboard, but he is still some way off reaching the runaway leader, Robert Lewandowski. The Bayern striker scored again on Monday in the German side's rearranged Bundesliga match versus Arminia Bielefeld which was moved due to their Club World Cup exploits over the weekend.Lewandowski now has 25 goals and 50 points. His nearest rival for the Golden Shoe is fellow Bundesliga striker Andre Silva, who has now scored 18 for the season.Liverpool may have lost against Leicester, but Mohamed Salah still scored a lovely goal to take his tally to 17.Georgios Giakoumakis of Venlo has scored an impressive 22 goals and is the highest player on our list who doesn't feature within one of Europe's top five leagues.A talented group on 16 goals for the campaign includes Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappe, Romelu Lukaku, and Luis Suarez.2020/21 EUROPEAN GOLDEN SHOE STANDINGS 2020/21 European Golden ShoeA reminder: The five elite leagues - Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 - all carry a weighting of 2, meaning that a player will be awarded two points for every goal they score in these competitions. Liverpool need more from Sadio Mane in Premier League top four race
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Sadio Mane has hit a sudden downturn in form, and there is no surprise that has coincided with Liverpool’s recent struggles in the Premier League. The Reds’ No.10 has scored just once in his last seven outings in the league, and has in fact hit the net just three times after starting the season with four goals from four games. Liverpool have lost three league games on the bounce for the first time in the Jurgen Klopp era and have fallen well away from the title race, now well and truly in a fight to secure a top four position. Statistically, Mane’s drop off doesn’t really show. According to Instat, his xG90 is slightly up this season, 0.48 from 0.4, while dribbles P90 have jumped from 4.6 to six.Crucially, while his xG has improved, his end product is waning. Last season Mane averaged 0.55 goals P90, just over one every two games, but this season so far he is going at one every three fixtures, averaging 0.33 goals P90.That is his lowest goal scoring ratio since arriving in English football, and that is including his two seasons with Southampton, despite the fact that he is attempting more shots and registering more shots on target per 90 minutes than he ever has. Comparing that to his teammate Mohamed Salah, he is being vastly outperformed by the Egyptian – while Salah is slightly down on xG90 from last season, he is averaging 0.75 goals P90 and currently leads the golden boot race with 17 Premier League goals. There seems to be a great deal of frustration in Mane’s game at the moment, and it is easy to see why as he loses possession of the ball 16.4 times P90, is caught offside just about once every match and gets fouled 2.7 times P90 – his highest total in England and far greater than Salah’s 0.8.Things aren’t quite sticking for Liverpool, and indeed for Mane, who tested positive for COVID-19 earlier in the season and was injured little over a week ago, missing two games. The entire rhythm of Jurgen Klopp’s side has felt the effects of this season, particularly the full-backs and Andrew Robertson, who Mane has developed a brilliant partnership on the left-hand side, may well have something to do with it as well. Even defensively, in a team that doesn’t appear to be pressing at it has done in the past, Mane has increased his contributions in recoveries in the opposition half P90 and percentage of challenges won per match. The impending return of Diogo Jota should do some good in at least taking part of the burden off Mane’s shoulders, as well as those of the rest of the front three, which could be key in Liverpool achieving Champions League football for next season. Perhaps it is a combination of fatigue, bad luck and just a natural, slight recession after a relentless title-winning campaign. Mane is still a top class footballer capable of things not many others are, but he needs to start showing those things again to help his side pick their season back up. .

Barnsley 0-1 Chelsea Player Ratings: Abraham on target as Blues labour
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Chelsea laboured to a 1-0 FA Cup success over Barnsley away from home to set up a quarter-final with Sheffield United.A single goal from Tammy Abraham was the difference between the sides, with Chelsea struggling for penetration against their Championship opponents.Indeed, they managed only a single shot on target against a team they had more than 70% possession against. Nevertheless, the much-changed side progressed and will not play in the last eight on the weekend of 20th March.Barnsley 0-1 Chelsea: Player Ratings, Match Stats, Player StatsHere’s how they fared at Oakwell. ✔️ GOOD PERFORMANCETammy Abraham: 7.4Of all Chelsea’s starting XI, Tammy Abraham saw the ball only more than Marcos Alonso, who was taken off at half-time. His performance, though, was not about volume, it was about two defining moments. The first was being at the right place at the right time to tap into an empty net after a surging run from Reece James. The second was about being at the right place at the right time to stretch every sinew in his neck to head over a goal-bound Barnsley effort.Completing just 58% of his passes, this was not a classy display, but it was a decisive one.Reece James: 7.6Introduced at half-time to bring a spark that the team was lacking, James amply delivered. It was his athletic run and cool head that allowed him to fashion the only goal of the game, while he completed 93% of his passes, including eight in the final third. He was a useful outlet and though he played only 45 minutes critical for the success of his team.❌ BAD PERFORMANCEHakim Ziyech: 5.2After failing to fire in the 0-0 draw against Wolves in Thomas Tuchel’s first match as Chelsea boss, the Morocco international has done his prospects of game time in the weeks ahead little good with his display against Barnsley. He did get four crosses into the box but did not complete a single dribble and had only one touch in the box. Moreover, he did not have any kind of shot and completed just 65% of his passes. ⭐ STAR MANKurt Zouma: 7.7It is fitting, given the flow of the tie, that a Chelsea defender finished with the highest rating. Although the Blues had much of the ball, they finished the match with their backs to the wall.As the ball came into the box, Zouma was a magnet for it. He won all six of his headers and completed six clearances. Moreover, he completed two interceptions and made one recovery. No player saw more of the ball than the centre-back, who touched it 125 times.Barnsley 0-1 Chelsea: Player Ratings, Match Stats, Player Stats .

Who completes the most crosses per game in the Premier League?
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Nobody sends more crosses into the box per 90 minutes than Newcastle winger Ryan Fraser, who delivers 10.6 per game in the Premier League. The former Bournemouth player has only started six matches in the league this season due to injury concerns and probably a lack of form, too, but when he does play, his game is centred around getting balls into the penalty area.Within the top five for the players with the most crosses per game in 2020/21, is also his Newcastle team-mate Matt Ritchie, whose tally is 8.0.The fact that both Newcastle wide men make the top five displays that Bruce has clearly asked his players to bombard the opposition penalty area with deliveries.Interestingly, two players from another club also make the top five in Liverpool. It isn't a total surprise to see Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson on the leaderboard for their 8.8 and 8.4 crosses into the box per 90 respectively, but it doesn't tell the whole story with regards to a comparison with Newcastle. It would be fair to say that Steve Bruce has likely requested that his players bombard the opposition penalty area with crosses, whereas the numbers from Jurgen Klopp's men are boosted because they receive much, much more of the ball than the Magpies in possession.Fraser's number may be the highest, but he has played significantly less minutes than the Liverpool pair.Making up the top five is new Man Utd recruit Alex Telles, who sends 8.4 crosses into the box per 90.In the above table, it features players who have played 500 minutes or more in the Premier League this season. If this filter is taken away, the player with the best record for crosses so far this season is actually Conor Hourihane, who established a per 90 tally of 10.7 before his January switch on loan to Swansea. .

European Golden Shoe 2020/21: Ronaldo, Suarez, and Silva gain ground on Lewandowski
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Bayern won 1-0 versus Hertha at the weekend with the only goal of the game being scored by Kingsley Coman.Robert Lewandowski actually missed a penalty in that one and so failed to take the opportunity to add to his goalscoring tally for the season, which currently stands at 24.Even though he still holds a commanding lead, others were able to close the gap slightly, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Andre Silva, and Luis Suarez all getting on the scoresheet for their respective sides.Silva has now scored 17 for Eintracht Frankfurt this campaign, and currently represents the biggest threat to Lewandowski as the leader, even if the Portuguese forward is seven goals adrift.Genk's Paul Onuachu still finds himself high in the standings despite the disadvantage of the competition weighting.Ronaldo, Suarez, and Kylian Mbappe have all scored 16 goals so far this season and are on 32 points. There is a talented group on 28 points which includes Erling Haaland, Romelu Lukaku, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ciro Immobile, and Wout Weghorst.Mohamed Salah scored Liverpool's only goal of the game in the defeat versus Man City, and moves on to 15 strikes for the season.2020/21 EUROPEAN GOLDEN SHOE STANDINGS 2020/21 European Golden ShoeAt this stage of the season, the leagues that run on the calendar year - ie 2020 - inevitably get a head start but these days with the league weightings, very few are still there by the end of the traditional 2020/21 campaign. Premier League Team of the Week: Foden, Gundogan, and Sterling put Liverpool down
By admin | | 0 Comments |

One of the most important matches of the Premier League title race took place on Sunday as defending champions Liverpool hosted league leaders Man City an Anfield. It was Pep Guardiola's side who emphatically emerged victorious with a 4-1 away win which put them five points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand.Though he missed a penalty with a fairly disastrous attempt from the spot, Ilkay Gundogan (8.8) was once again sensational for City, and scored two of the four goals from midfield.Gundogan was FootballCritic's star player for that game, but the headlines were ultimately stolen by Phil Foden (8.7), who put in the kind of performance that will go down as perhaps the most memorable of his short career so far. With the game balanced at 0-0 following a dismal first half, Foden took it upon himself to open things up in forward areas, continually looking for that killer pass or dribble. He would record a goal and an assist, with his finishing being slammed into the roof of the net past Alisson, who had a shocking day for Liverpool. He also won 10/15 duels.Raheem Sterling (8.3) makes up the City trio who make it into the Team of the Week, having also got on the scoresheet. The overall best performer of the weekend was Tottenham midfielder Pierre Emile Hojbjerg (9.3), who completed an outstanding 100/111 attempted passes and also had more touches of the ball than anyone in this round of fixtures with 121.The attacking trio up top is made up by Miguel Almiron (8.8) and Allan Saint-Maximin (8.1) who finally gave Newcastle fans something to get excited about with their respective performances versus Southampton. Almiron scored two, and Saint-Maximin set up two.James Ward-Prowse (8.1) was unlucky to be on the losing side in that fixture, as Newcastle won 3-2.Jonny Evans (7.4), Liam Cooper (8.0), and Joachim Andersen (7.9) all make it into the backline after securing clean sheets for Leicester, Leeds, and Fulham respectively.Arsenal suffered a damaging loss against Aston Villa, but new signing Maty Ryan (8.2) still impressed between the sticks, making seven saves. .

Premier League Table: Leeds leapfrog Arsenal with Crystal Palace win
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Leeds produced a commanding performance to beat Crystal Palace 2-0 on Monday and move 10th in the Premier League standings ahead of Arsenal.Marcelo Bielsa’s side took the win thanks to goals early in either half from Jack Harrison and Patrick Bamford respectively. Although a team noted for the number of goals they concede, Leeds gave up few chances against a Crystal Palace attack that looked rudderless without the injured Wilfried Zaha. For Palace, defeat means that they remain 13th in the standings, with little danger of being sucked into the relegation battle or being involved in the European fight.Earlier in the weekend, Manchester City had strengthened their grip on first place thanks to an emphatic 4-1 win over Liverpool. Pep Guardiola’s side are now five points clear of Manchester United, who were held to a 3-3 draw against Everton in a remarkable match at Old Trafford.Liverpool, meanwhile, remain fourth in the standings, though 10 points behind City, who also have a game extra to play over all of their nearest rivals, it seems that their title defence is set to end tepidly.Leicester continue to occupy third, while Chelsea are coming up strong in fifth after a fine start to life under former Paris Saint-Germain boss Thomas Tuchel. The Blues have now won their last three matches.West Ham and Everton continue to vie for European spots next season, while Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham and Aston Villa are not yet out of contention either. It was a good weekend for Newcastle in the lower half of the table, as they were the only side in that area to pick up a win.Meanwhile, Sheffield United, West Brom and Fulham continue to be cut badly adrift in the bottom three, with the Cottagers eight points shy of 17th-placed Burnley. Sheffield United 1-2 Chelsea Player Ratings: Mount, Kovacic and Jorginho star
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Chelsea were far from their best but they were able to see off Sheffield United 2-1 thanks to a second-half Jorginho penalty. Mason Mount had given them the lead before a freak own goal from Antonio Rudiger had handed the home side an easy route back into the contest. Sheffield United 1-2 Chelsea: Player Ratings, Match Stats, Player StatsBut which players stood out for the right reasons?✔️ GOOD PERFORMANCEMason Mount: 7.2There was concern among observers when Thomas Tuchel left the playmaker out of his first starting XI, but he impressed off the bench and has been a starter ever since. And in a match that struggled to get going he was often the one providing the spark, deservedly opening the scoring just before the break. Timo Werner's break down the left saw the German pull the ball back to the edge of the area, and Mount met it sweetly to sweep into the far corner. Mateo Kovacic: 7.7Under Tuchelball, Kovacic's involvement in matches has increased exponentially, becoming the touch and passing machine that keeps Chelsea ticking. That's exactly what he did once again, having well over 100 touches and 100 passes in the match in a team that now likes to hold onto the ball much, much more. Kovacic also won 5/10 duels and both of his tackles, showing an all-round midfield performance that was until late lacking in Chelsea's side. ⭐ STAR MANJorginho: 8.1Like Kovacic, Jorginho's ball retention skills in the middle of the pitch are viewed as a prized asset by Tuchel, in a system where more creative players are sacrificed to maintain that level of balance. And what's more, he slotted home the winning goal from the penalty spot after Werner had been brought down inside the area. He and Kovacic made almost 200 passes between them - this is something we can expect from Chelsea going forward. High volume of passing, high completion, high protection of the defence. It's working well for the team so far. Sheffield United 1-2 Chelsea: Player Ratings, Match Stats, Player Stats .

Why is Erling Haaland struggling to score goals for Borussia Dortmund?
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Borussia Dortmund suffered their eighth defeat of the Bundesliga season on Saturday in a 2-1 defeat to Freiburg. It was the club’s third defeat from their last five league games and means the club now sit a massive 16 points behind league leaders Bayern Munich and just 15 off the relegation play-off spot. While a number of issues may be playing a part in Dortmund’s slump in form, interim head coach Edin Terzic would undoubtedly be able to ignore most of them if only he could get his star striker scoring goals quite like he once was earlier in the season. As incredible as it may be to say for a player that currently has 22 goals to his name this season, Erling Haaland may be out of form. Is Haaland out of form at Dortmund? It may seem odd to pick apart the performances of a striker that currently boasts a record of 27 goals and six assists in just 29 games for the Bundesliga side, but there’s little doubt that that well of goals seems to be drying up ever so slightly. For example, since the turn of the year Haaland has featured in each of Dortmund’s eight games in all competitions but managed just five goals along the way. Again, that would be fine for most strikers but is by no means the high standards the Norwegian striker has set himself. Indeed, when we break Haaland’s season into two parts - his form in 2020 and then his form since the turn of the year - we see a drastic turn in his performances. In the first half of the season the striker was averaging an incredible 1.31 goals per 90 minutes for Dortmund but since the turn of the year that number has dropped to 0.57. Why is Haaland now struggling to score?Perhaps the metric that underlines Haaland’s recent performances is the player’s xG. Haaland has an impressive average of 0.71 xG per 90 minutes for Dortmund this season, but that number has dropped down to 0.60 over the last five games. Yet, even that number is a little misleading. As we can see from the graph above, which outlines Haaland’s xG with his own average for the season, the striker has managed to accumulate an xG greater than his seasonal average in two of his last seven games in all competitions. And as such it’ll come as no surprise to learn that he only managed five goals in that period. As the old saying goes, one swallow doesn't make a summer. And in this instance a handful of games most certainly do not suggest that Dortmund’s key striker is showing any signs of long-term deterioration or a lasting dip in performances. Haaland is just in a bit of a slump.Perhaps the young striker will bounce back and this minor bump on the road will be forgotten about soon enough. But for now there’s undoubtedly an issue that needs solved at Dortmund. The German side have a misfiring striker and until he gets back into his groove their poor performances may rumble on. .
