Arsenal 4-2 Leeds United, Player Ratings: Aubameyang lethal but Meslier has nightmare
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Arsenal and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang helped themselves to a haul of goals as Leeds United were comfortably beaten 4-2 at the Emirates. The Gunners captain struck a hat-trick in the clash, showing excellent finishing to punish Marcelo Bielsa's side who were naive defensively throughout. Arsenal 4-2 Leeds United: Player Ratings, Match Stats, Player StatsBut who else performed to a high standard?✔️ GOOD PERFORMANCEHector Bellerin: 7.7The full-back hasn't always been able to recover the form he showed prior to suffering a serious ligament injury, but he turned on the style here. He was given plenty of freedom on the right flank to get involved in attacks and Leeds' backline couldn't always stay in touch with him. He capped things off by slamming home at the near post to all but seal the win in the first half, and it was an encouraging afternoon for a player still getting back to where he once was. ❌ BAD PERFORMANCEIllan Meslier: 3.9The 20-year-old has had his moments this season but it's fair to say that he did his defenders no favours with a dreadful first-half showing. He allowed Aubameyang's low shot to creep inside his near post, showing a weak hand when going down low, then he was too slow with the ball at his feet and Bukayo Saka picked his pocket, forcing the keeper to bring him down for a penalty. And to make things worse he couldn't keep out Hector Bellerin's low driven shot at his near post, an effort that he really should have done more to keep out. Bielsa will be hoping his confidence isn't negatively impacted by what was an altogether miserable showing. ⭐ STAR MANPierre-Emerick Aubameyang: 9.0The skipper returned to the side after a spell missing and did so in explosive style, taking Leeds on a run-around. He opened the scoring by fashioning a bit of space on the left flank and being able to squeeze his shot in at the near post, though Illan Meslier should perhaps have done better. He powered home from the penalty spot for number two, after Bukayo Saka had been brought down inside the area. And he showed striking instincts to connect with Smith-Rowe's arrowed cross to nod into the empty net and all but secure the victory. He also pinged a shot off the post as well as creating a Big Chance for team-mate Martin Odegaard. A great all-round display. Arsenal 4-2 Leeds United: Player Ratings, Match Stats, Player Stats .

Odegaard to finally start? How Arsenal could line up against Leeds
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will be hoping to turn his side’s poor form around with the welcome of Leeds to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. The London club have failed to win any of their last three games and as a result continue to languish in midtable in the English top flight. Ahead of this crucial Premier League tie, we take a look at how Arteta is likely to line-up his side. The Arsenal manager should be boosted with defensive additions Bernd Leno and David Luiz both returning from suspension to join a back line that will still have to make do without the injured. Kieran Tierney. As such, Hector Bellerin, Rob Holding, Luiz and fill-in left-back Cedric Soares is likely to be the starting back four on Sunday. In midfield, Arteta is still without Thomas Partey who remains sidelined through injury. As such, we’re likely to see Granit Xhaka take up his usual spot in the middle of the park alongside Dani Ceballos, although Sunday may be an ideal opportunity to finally give Martin Odegaard an opportunity to show his talents. If not, Emile Smith Rowe is likely to take up his favoured No.10 role. In attack, Arteta may be tempted to give Nicolas Pepe a rare start in the Premier League but is more likely to turn to Bukayo Saka to take up his spot on the right wing, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang returning on the left and Alexandre Lacazette up front. Who completes the most crosses per game in the Premier League?
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Nobody sends more crosses into the box per 90 minutes than Newcastle winger Ryan Fraser, who delivers 10.6 per game in the Premier League. The former Bournemouth player has only started six matches in the league this season due to injury concerns and probably a lack of form, too, but when he does play, his game is centred around getting balls into the penalty area.Within the top five for the players with the most crosses per game in 2020/21, is also his Newcastle team-mate Matt Ritchie, whose tally is 8.0.The fact that both Newcastle wide men make the top five displays that Bruce has clearly asked his players to bombard the opposition penalty area with deliveries.Interestingly, two players from another club also make the top five in Liverpool. It isn't a total surprise to see Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson on the leaderboard for their 8.8 and 8.4 crosses into the box per 90 respectively, but it doesn't tell the whole story with regards to a comparison with Newcastle. It would be fair to say that Steve Bruce has likely requested that his players bombard the opposition penalty area with crosses, whereas the numbers from Jurgen Klopp's men are boosted because they receive much, much more of the ball than the Magpies in possession.Fraser's number may be the highest, but he has played significantly less minutes than the Liverpool pair.Making up the top five is new Man Utd recruit Alex Telles, who sends 8.4 crosses into the box per 90.In the above table, it features players who have played 500 minutes or more in the Premier League this season. If this filter is taken away, the player with the best record for crosses so far this season is actually Conor Hourihane, who established a per 90 tally of 10.7 before his January switch on loan to Swansea. .

European Golden Shoe 2020/21: Ronaldo, Suarez, and Silva gain ground on Lewandowski
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Bayern won 1-0 versus Hertha at the weekend with the only goal of the game being scored by Kingsley Coman.Robert Lewandowski actually missed a penalty in that one and so failed to take the opportunity to add to his goalscoring tally for the season, which currently stands at 24.Even though he still holds a commanding lead, others were able to close the gap slightly, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Andre Silva, and Luis Suarez all getting on the scoresheet for their respective sides.Silva has now scored 17 for Eintracht Frankfurt this campaign, and currently represents the biggest threat to Lewandowski as the leader, even if the Portuguese forward is seven goals adrift.Genk's Paul Onuachu still finds himself high in the standings despite the disadvantage of the competition weighting.Ronaldo, Suarez, and Kylian Mbappe have all scored 16 goals so far this season and are on 32 points. There is a talented group on 28 points which includes Erling Haaland, Romelu Lukaku, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ciro Immobile, and Wout Weghorst.Mohamed Salah scored Liverpool's only goal of the game in the defeat versus Man City, and moves on to 15 strikes for the season.2020/21 EUROPEAN GOLDEN SHOE STANDINGS 2020/21 European Golden ShoeAt this stage of the season, the leagues that run on the calendar year - ie 2020 - inevitably get a head start but these days with the league weightings, very few are still there by the end of the traditional 2020/21 campaign. Premier League Team of the Week: Foden, Gundogan, and Sterling put Liverpool down
By admin | | 0 Comments |

One of the most important matches of the Premier League title race took place on Sunday as defending champions Liverpool hosted league leaders Man City an Anfield. It was Pep Guardiola's side who emphatically emerged victorious with a 4-1 away win which put them five points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand.Though he missed a penalty with a fairly disastrous attempt from the spot, Ilkay Gundogan (8.8) was once again sensational for City, and scored two of the four goals from midfield.Gundogan was FootballCritic's star player for that game, but the headlines were ultimately stolen by Phil Foden (8.7), who put in the kind of performance that will go down as perhaps the most memorable of his short career so far. With the game balanced at 0-0 following a dismal first half, Foden took it upon himself to open things up in forward areas, continually looking for that killer pass or dribble. He would record a goal and an assist, with his finishing being slammed into the roof of the net past Alisson, who had a shocking day for Liverpool. He also won 10/15 duels.Raheem Sterling (8.3) makes up the City trio who make it into the Team of the Week, having also got on the scoresheet. The overall best performer of the weekend was Tottenham midfielder Pierre Emile Hojbjerg (9.3), who completed an outstanding 100/111 attempted passes and also had more touches of the ball than anyone in this round of fixtures with 121.The attacking trio up top is made up by Miguel Almiron (8.8) and Allan Saint-Maximin (8.1) who finally gave Newcastle fans something to get excited about with their respective performances versus Southampton. Almiron scored two, and Saint-Maximin set up two.James Ward-Prowse (8.1) was unlucky to be on the losing side in that fixture, as Newcastle won 3-2.Jonny Evans (7.4), Liam Cooper (8.0), and Joachim Andersen (7.9) all make it into the backline after securing clean sheets for Leicester, Leeds, and Fulham respectively.Arsenal suffered a damaging loss against Aston Villa, but new signing Maty Ryan (8.2) still impressed between the sticks, making seven saves. .

Premier League Table: Leeds leapfrog Arsenal with Crystal Palace win
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Leeds produced a commanding performance to beat Crystal Palace 2-0 on Monday and move 10th in the Premier League standings ahead of Arsenal.Marcelo Bielsa’s side took the win thanks to goals early in either half from Jack Harrison and Patrick Bamford respectively. Although a team noted for the number of goals they concede, Leeds gave up few chances against a Crystal Palace attack that looked rudderless without the injured Wilfried Zaha. For Palace, defeat means that they remain 13th in the standings, with little danger of being sucked into the relegation battle or being involved in the European fight.Earlier in the weekend, Manchester City had strengthened their grip on first place thanks to an emphatic 4-1 win over Liverpool. Pep Guardiola’s side are now five points clear of Manchester United, who were held to a 3-3 draw against Everton in a remarkable match at Old Trafford.Liverpool, meanwhile, remain fourth in the standings, though 10 points behind City, who also have a game extra to play over all of their nearest rivals, it seems that their title defence is set to end tepidly.Leicester continue to occupy third, while Chelsea are coming up strong in fifth after a fine start to life under former Paris Saint-Germain boss Thomas Tuchel. The Blues have now won their last three matches.West Ham and Everton continue to vie for European spots next season, while Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham and Aston Villa are not yet out of contention either. It was a good weekend for Newcastle in the lower half of the table, as they were the only side in that area to pick up a win.Meanwhile, Sheffield United, West Brom and Fulham continue to be cut badly adrift in the bottom three, with the Cottagers eight points shy of 17th-placed Burnley. Concussion substitutes in the Premier League: What are they and how are they used?
By admin | | 0 Comments |

With the growing long-term fear of concussion over the wellbeing of players, concussion substitutes have been introduced on a trial basis in the Premier League.Aston Villa’s home encounter with Arsenal was the first match to take place after they became part of the laws, but in what competitions can they be used and in which circumstances? What are concussion substitutions? Concussion substitutes have been introduced in a bid to stop clubs taking undue risks with players who have head injuries. There are concerns that footballers have played when concussed, and there are fears for their long-term health as a result. With concussion substitutes available, clubs are given another two potential changes to use over the course of a match if a player is suffering from suspected concussion. It is up to the discretion of club doctors to decide whether a player falls under this category. What is concussion? According to the NHS: “Concussion is a temporary injury to the brain caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head.“It usually only lasts up to a few days or weeks, although it sometimes needs emergency treatment and some people can have longer-lasting problems.“It's important to avoid head injuries as repeated concussions or blows to the head have been linked to serious problems, including a brain condition called chronic traumatic encephalopathy.”What happens when a concussion substitute is made? The process for a concussion substitute to be made is slightly different to the normal substitution procedure. Instead of the usual white form handed to the fourth official, clubs will use a green form, indicating the difference between the types of change. These players are permanently removed from the game.Additionally, it should be noted that if a concussion substitute is made, the opposition are given one additional change. For example, if Arsenal had used one concussion substitute against Aston Villa, the Birmingham side would have been given an additional change to make on top of their usual three.Do clubs have to make a concussion substitute when a player has a head knock? Although clubs are compelled to take players suffering from a head injury off, they do not necessarily have to use one of their concussion substitutes to do this. Why would they not? Simply because it would offer their opponents a chance to use that additional substitute.Let’s use the Aston Villa v Arsenal example again. If a Villa player suffered a suspected concussion after 85 minutes, they would be granted the opportunity to change them. Of course, if they had used their full complement of substitutes, they would have to dip into their concussion change pool, but if they had only used two of their regular changes, the player could be brought off in that manner.By using a regular substitution, Villa would be depriving their opponents of having the luxury of making an additional change.Who was the first to use a concussion substitute? No-one has used a concussion substitution in the Premier League as yet.How long does the concussion substitute trial last? The Premier League will trial these changes until at least the end of the 2020/21 season. It can be extended until the end of the 2021/22 campaign, however. Why are concussion substitutes only in the Premier League? It is important to stress that this is only a trial and not yet a permanent law of the game. The Premier League is the only major competition taking part in this trial, although less celebrated competitions are testing it.One of the reasons that Premier League clubs are doubtless so keen to implement it is because they are one of the few major competitions in which there are only three substitutes permitted this season. .
