UFC welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman, retained his undisputed championship with a third-round TKO over former teammate, Gilbert Burns. The two met at UFC 258’s main event and ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ reminded fans why he’s one of the best. ‘Durinho’ Burns provided some adversity for the champion early on and even rocked Usman. However, Kamaru Usman’s jab paid dividends in a massive way as it began to soften up Burns’ chin into the second round. Gilbert Burns wasn’t as comfortable standing and trading with the champion once he was being lit up with the jab. Not to mention, Usman was effortlessly changing stances and this led to a clinical barrage of strikes. The third round saw more of the same and Burns was dropped to the canvas and finished shortly thereafter. Emotions were high right after the fight as the two have had a complicated dynamic going into the fight. Both men have been stoic in the media despite the fact that they are friends and indeed have a long history together. I am the welterweight champ for a reason, and I’m here to stay.” Kamaru Usman is truly here to stay as he’s now in the conversation with Georges St-Pierre for winning records. Being mentioned alongside ‘GSP’ is no mean task, and Usman is ready to become the new welterweight GOAT. His resume is beginning to stack up, and he’s bound for a Hall of Fame jacket at this rate. ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ has beaten Woodley, Covington, Masvidal, and Burns and will be looking for his next challenger.
